The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
