Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability
The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
