Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these drugs need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
